The scale of repression and human rights violations by the military junta in Myanmar is taking an increasingly terrifying turn. An independent UN investigative team has reported that the junta forces are carrying out systematic and continuous atrocities against the country’s civilian population. These sensational findings regarding the ongoing conflict, increased airstrikes, and crimes against humanity against ordinary people emerged in a recently published annual report by the United Nations.
The new report by the UN’s Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) states that Myanmar’s military junta has targeted ordinary people. Airstrikes are being deliberately launched against homes, schools, hospitals, and displacement camps. The integration of new technologies into military attacks in recent times has made the situation even more complex.
According to the investigative team’s data, the military is now increasing the use of motorized gliders and advanced drones alongside traditional warplanes. As a result, ordinary citizens face extreme danger without any prior warning or time, losing the opportunity to seek safe shelter. These airstrikes, directed at schools and children, have caused numerous casualties, constituting a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
The report also notes that indescribable torture is being inflicted on detainees in various detention centers run by the military. Ordinary people are being arrested merely for political differences, criticizing the government on social media, or minor protests.
Under strict and repressive laws issued by the junta government in 2025, many people are facing long-term imprisonment or the death penalty. Alongside physical torture in detention centers, the UN investigative team has gathered extensive evidence of sexual violence. A fearful atmosphere prevails throughout Myanmar under this reign of terror by the junta.
Nicholas Koumjian, head of the UN’s Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), stated that they are working to identify the masterminds behind this barbaric rampage. They are examining through which command structures or under whose direct orders these war crimes and crimes against humanity are being committed.
For specific incidents such as airstrikes on schools and children, satellite imagery, video footage, forensic evidence, and eyewitness testimonies have been collected.
Notably, this investigative mechanism does not directly conduct trials; however, it is building a vast repository of information to ensure the prosecution of the guilty in the International Criminal Court (ICC) or the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the future.
Amid this ongoing crisis in Myanmar, demands for justice from the international community are growing stronger. The UN team currently holds undeniable proof and digital evidence collected from more than 1,600 reliable sources.
According to human rights analysts, this brutality by Myanmar’s military junta is not merely an internal crisis of one country; it is a matter of major concern for all of human civilization. It is hoped that the combined pressure of the International Criminal Court and the global community, along with these documentary records, will pave the way for justice for the persecuted ordinary people of Myanmar in the future.
