Strict enforcement of laws is essential to prevent road crashes. Compliance with traffic laws and increased awareness among young people can play a significant role in reducing road crashes. The death rate among youths is alarmingly high due to reckless motorcycle speeding, avoid helmets, and violations of traffic regulations. Young people need to become more actively involved in receiving proper training, obtaining valid driving licenses, and participating in social initiatives to build safer roads.

Today, Sunday (10 May), at 10:00 am, Barrister Muhammad Nawshad Zamir, Member of Parliament of Panchagarh-1 constituency, made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a program titled “Youth Talk for Comprehensive Road Safety Law,” organized by the Health Sector of Dhaka Ahsania Mission at the auditorium of Dhaka Ahsania Mission’s head office in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

As the Special Guest at the event, Additional Deputy Inspector General (Operations) of the Highway Police, Muntasirul Islam, PPM, stated that stronger initiatives are needed to prevent road crashes. He emphasized that it is crucial to uncover the actual extent of road fatalities and adopt effective measures accordingly. He further noted that enacting a separate and comprehensive road safety law is important to ensure road safety. Alongside the enforcement of laws, all stakeholders must also play a conscious and responsible role.

The session was chaired by Dr. S. M. Khalilur Rahman, Vice President of Dhaka Ahsania Mission. Iqbal Masud, Director of the Health and WASH Sector of Dhaka Ahsania Mission, also spoke at the event. During the discussion, they urged Members of Parliament to expedite the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive road safety law.

The program was moderated by Sharmin Rahman, Road Safety Project Coordinator of Dhaka Ahsania Mission. During the presentation of the keynote paper, Marjana Muntaha, Coordinator of the Ahsania Mission Youth Forum for Health and Wellbeing, presented demands on behalf of the youth, calling for the formulation of a road safety law and its strict enforcement.

More than one hundred young students from various universities and youth organizations participated in the event. They stated that, in line with the United Nations’ Safe System Approach, it is essential to formulate a comprehensive road safety law. They also emphasized the need to ensure road safety education for all road users, including students, drivers, and pedestrians. In addition, they stressed the importance of actively involving young people in both policymaking and implementation processes to strengthen road safety governance.
