Projonmo Prokriti Prashnik: We always say, “Protect Bangladesh” or “Stop littering” and so on. We always criticise our country for the pollution that we ourselves caused. We always talk big words, but never take the action.
Every morning, when I go to Karate practice, the roads are clean. And it stays like that until Friday. Almost every Friday, a marathon is hosted. Which is fine. It gives people who don’t get to step out as much the opportunity to exercise, compete and also interact with others. But in the process of nourishing ourselves, we litter the nature and our environment.
When the marathon is being set up, they place hydration points at certain places. They have tables with varieties of drinks. The runners choose their preferred drinks and wet their throats. When they’re done, they throw the plastic cup anywhere. My father used to report it to the authorities, which installed a bin near every hydration point. Later led to a bin being installed.
We thought that would work. But nope. People have a way of their own. There were cups circling the bin. Not in the bin. Circling the bin. They did not bother to clean up after themselves because they knew there were people who will clean up something they throw their trash.
See, the city corporation cleaners already have loads of work cleaning up the pollution of Dhaka as it is. If we do litter the places, their workload increases.
As human beings and citizens of our beloved country Bangladesh, we should be responsible for our actions. A nation where its own people are irresponsible and uncivil, is a nation nearing its end. In order to live a prosperous life and produce a beautiful Bangladesh, we all should be responsible and caring towards our homeland.
