Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has called for greater youth involvement in tackling the climate crisis, stressing that younger generations will face the heaviest burden of climate change impact in the years ahead. She said that building integrity, values and long-term thinking is essential for a sustainable future and that young people are best positioned to drive this transformation.
The adviser made the remarks on Thursday (18 September) at a ceremony held at the Water Development Board in Dhaka. At the event, Youth for NDC and its partners presented her with a proposal titled ‘NDC 3.0 for COP30 – Stakeholder Recommendations.’ The recommendations aim to support Bangladesh’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), to be submitted ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).
Underscoring the limitation of state-led processes, the adviser cautioned that the management often remains restricted by their own bureaucratic framework. She stressed that community-driven and youth-led initiative is vital to cultivating fresh social values. ‘Values in society are not made overnight; they evolve gradually,’ she said.
The event was attended by key global partners, including Edwin Koekkoek, First Counsellor of the European Union Delegation to Bangladesh; Ulrich Kleppmann, Counsellor and Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy; and Nayoka Martinez Backstrom, First Secretary and Deputy Head of Development Cooperation at the Swedish Embassy. Representatives from the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) were also present, among others.
The proposal outlines 14 actionable recommendations across four critical sectors- energy, agriculture, forestry and urbanisation.
