Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Sunday has said that Objective and accountable media are essential to safeguard national interests, restore public trust and strengthen democracy.
Speaking as chief guest at a discussion on the Media Reform Commission’s report in Dhaka, Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan underscored that durable reforms must be rooted in public backing, political consensus and sectoral cooperation. “Change on paper alone cannot bring sustainability; we need a psychological shift,” she observed.
She said that the management has already formed a five-member advisory committee to review and implement the commission’s recommendations, while also examining broader sectoral concerns. “The formation of a dedicated media commission itself shows the government’s recognition of the importance of media freedom,” the adviser added.
The adviser stressed that the roadmap now being drafted will focus on enhancing journalists’ professionalism, ensuring self-regulation, fostering unity among stakeholders and empowering the media to play a stronger role in the economy.
The adviser also reiterated the management’s tough stance against mob justice, calling for ethical, responsible journalism to strengthen public confidence. “The management will provide support, but the responsibility of sustaining reforms rests with the media,” she said.
