In a significant move to protect forest land and biodiversity, the government has reclaimed 144 acres of illegally occupied land in Purbachal following an extensive eviction drive led by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The operation, conducted in the ecologically sensitive region of Purbachal, resulted in the demolition of 155 unauthorized houses belonging to 44 families. Authorities reported that 4.6 acres of forest land were physically recovered during the drive, with an estimated market value of approximately BDT 70 crore. Officials have now declared the entire 144-acre forest area free from illegal encroachment.
The drive was spearheaded by the Divisional Forest Officer of the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Dhaka. It was carried out with support from the Rupganj Army Camp, RAB-1, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Kaliganj Upazila Administration, Kaliganj Police Station, RAJUK, and the Forest Department.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting the country’s biodiversity and natural resources, stating that strict enforcement actions like this will continue to ensure the preservation of forest lands across Bangladesh.
