Chattogram, April 29, 2026 – Today, Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) announced it will continue partnership with the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety as part of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ $350 million global commitment to prevent traffic deaths and injuries worldwide, announced by Mike Bloomberg at CityLab 2026, hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Aspen Institute. This will advance efforts to improve road design, infrastructure, and speed enforcement in Chattogram.
Each year, more than one million people – including 5,490 deaths in Bangladesh – lose their lives in road crashes, and another 20 to 50 million are injured, many with lifelong disabilities. Most of these deaths and injuries are not accidents, but the result of system failures including poorly designed roads, and public policies and urban design that favors vehicle speed over public health and safety.
According to the Chattogram City Road Safety Report 2025, jointly released by CCC and the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), at least 662 people were killed by road crashes from 2017 to 2024 in the city. Sadly, pedestrians were the most impacted road users during the period, with 363 fatalities, more than half of the total fatalities. More shockingly, pedestrian fatalities increased by 43% from 2017 to 2024. Following pedestrians, two- and three-wheeler occupants were the second most vulnerable road users, accounting for 195 fatalities. Under the BIGRS initiative, CCC will work with the stakeholders to address the road safety issues and ensure safe mobility in the city.
“This initiative will provide critical resources to strengthen our ongoing efforts to make streets safer and prevent traffic deaths in Chattogram,” said Mayor Dr. Sahadat Hossain. “We’re implementing proven strategies to protect our residents and build a more sustainable city through this collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies to ensure every Chattogram resident is safe on our streets.”
In Chattogram, the initiative will support implementing proven road safety policies and infrastructure improvements, training of police officers, speed enforcement, strengthen data and surveillance system and road safety communication. CCC will address the need for coordinated action to ensure safety for pedestrians and motorcyclists as well.
Dhaka North and Chattogram city in Bangladesh is among locations where the initiative will scale proven policies across 13 countries and in more than 30 cities. Locations include: Buenos Aires and Córdoba (Argentina); Chattogram and Dhaka North (Bangladesh); Campinas, Salvador, São Paulo State, and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); Cali and Medellín (Colombia); Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic); Guayaquil and Quito (Ecuador); Oromia State (Ethiopia); Karnataka State, Maharashtra State (including Mumbai and Pune), Delhi (India); Mombasa and Nairobi (Kenya); Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia); Jalisco State and Mexico City (Mexico); Kampala (Uganda); and Da Nang and Hanoi (Vietnam).
