A schoolgirl named Chaity was killed after being run over by a battery-operated auto-rickshaw while crossing the road on her way home after school in Barishal.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon after school hours in front of her school. She sustained severe injuries after being hit by the vehicle and was initially taken to Barishal General Hospital. Later, she was admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday night.
The incident was confirmed by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Al Mamun Ul Islam of Barishal Kotwali Model Police Station.
The deceased, Chaity, was an eighth-grade student at Sher-e-Bangla Girls’ School, Barishal. Police said she lived with her mother in a rented house near the Banglalink Tower area on Zia Road. Her father works at a private organization in Mymensingh.
According to police, the accident occurred when Chaity was crossing the road after school, and a battery-operated auto-rickshaw hit her from behind. The vehicle was reportedly moving at speed at the time.
The OC further stated that the body was handed over to the family without a post-mortem as no complaint was filed. He added that necessary legal action would be taken if a complaint is received.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns over road safety and the risks faced by students while crossing busy roads in urban areas.
